Connect with the Humane Tech movement!

Many here are likely already aware of https://humanetech.com (https://humanetech.com/podcast/ is particularly good btw).

They have a Discourse forum at https://community.humanetech.com and I encourage people here to join that movement and to bring up Snowdrift.coop whenever relevant. It’s been on my list to engage more, but don’t leave it to me.

I unfollowed them on Mastodon after few days since they promote proprietary software.

I’m not sure if they understand the importance of free/libre/open values.

But it’s good to reach out to them.

I like their Promoting Solutions that Improve Wellbeing, Freedom and Society.

I’m not sure how well they understand FLO, but note that the “community” forum and Mastadon account is run by someone else (who is supportive of Snowdrift.coop and probably FLO-sympathetic if novice to the ideas) who is endorsed in some way as a community person but manages the community stuff separately from the main Humane Tech organization.

I don’t really understand the governance or distribution of roles there. But the general messages are extremely well done and important, notably the podcast: https://humanetech.com/podcast/ which is not done by the community-outreach folks who do the forum and mastadon. The podcast is run by Aza Raskin and Tristan Harris. And while they can be fairly critiqued in not emphasizing FLO, the podcast shows them to be not at all apologetic and wishy-washy but pretty damn blunt about the extreme ethical problems with ad-tech and ad-based manipulative business models.

It would be a huge mistake to draw a FLO dividing line between us and them. Instead, we should be connecting with them and convincing them that well-funded-FLO is a major part of solving the issues they are otherwise diagnosing so well.

Update: I saw proactive FLO emphasis by the Humane Tech community lead guy. In Matrix chat, he brought up complaints about the non-FLO status of products that others mentioned. I think they’re really on our side all around.
